SPRINGVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) — A girl, age 7, has died after being struck by a school bus after exiting it Friday afternoon.
The accident happened on West Main Street in Springville just after 3 p.m. The Sheriff’s office says first aid was administered at the scene and the victim was transported to Bertrand Chafee Hospital where she later died.
An automated phone call from the school district informed parents that the child passed away. Online fundraising efforts have also started to cover funeral expenses.
The Superintendent of the Springville-Griffith School District released the following statement:
“I’m very sorry to inform you that there was a tragic accident this afternoon involving a Springville-Griffith school bus and one of our students. The Springville Griffith community will do all it can to support our students and families in the wake of this tragedy. The District will have crisis counselors available for students, faculty, staff and families who need assistance tomorrow at the Springville Elementary School from 10:00 to 12:00 tomorrow, and as needed going forward.
The District is working with authorities to determine the cause of the accident and to determine what can be done in the future to prevent similar tragedies. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.”
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.
