New stadium name; Same old signs

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) – Some of you may have noticed the signs on the way to 1 Bills Drive. They’re the same, even though the stadium has a new name.

We all know Ralph Wilson Stadium has been changed to New Era Field. And although the stadium was quick to change its signage, the thruway and the 219 were a little slower.

Susan Surdej, Regional Public Information Officer for the New York state DOT said, “Those signs are definitely underway.”

Surdej told News 4, you can still find the old signs along the NYS thruway, traveling on southbound lanes of the 219, and getting off the ramp from 219 to route 20A.

Although it may be an annoyance to some looking for the stadium and getting mixed messages, Surdej said there is good reason for the delay.

She said, “We’re in the process of designing a new plan that we’re going to be showing them and working to install in the field”

Surdej said it’s been in the discussion phase since the stadium name change. The time line on this however might surprise you.

She said, “It’s probably something you can look forward to next season. The plan is in design but still has to be reviewed with the Buffalo Bills.”

One of the reasons the changing of the signs has taken so long is because the DOT, New York State Thruway Authority, and Buffalo Bills, will be adding many more. This will help out-of-towners find their way more easily.

Surdej told us, “They’re laying out new routes of way finding to get people to the stadium from different points.”

So for now, put on your blinders as you drive by the signs on your way to the stadium. Bigger, and better are on the way for next year.
