KENMORE, N.Y. (WIVB) — Kenmore police are warning residents not to fall for an email scam going around.

The emails come from people pretending to be with the United States Postal Service and have links containing viruses. A photo of one of the phony emails can be seen above.

The Postal Service is not the first company scammers are pretending to be. One of the year’s common scams came from people pretending to be with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

In October, a Canadian man allegedly tried to scam an Iowa woman out of more than $8,300 by telling her she won the Australian lottery. He was apprehended by Cheektowaga police.

In the same month, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office warned of a phone scam involving a fake utility company.

These examples just show that scammers are taking on a number of identities, so be cautious.
