Rush for snow tires precedes first widespread snow of season

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Across Western New York, municipal crews have been preparing for the first time they’ll need to clear the snow off the roads this season. Drivers are also preparing their cars to deal with snowy roads.

That’s keeping the staff at places like Dunn Tire on Broadway pretty busy. “A crazy rush of customers just coming in and trying to beat the rush of having to wait in line for hours on end and get the work done and get them ready for whatever snow is coming our way,” store manager Matt Brown said.

The snow is still a few days away, and for now, a lot of people are enjoying the fall weather outside.

Inside the garage bays at service shops across the area, the cars keep coming through to get snow tires installed for the season.

“Any snow tire, regardless of the make or model is going to be better than any higher end, lower end all season tire,” Brown said.

Brown explained that snow tires are better because they’re made of a softer compound which won’t freeze up, and they have better siping, slits on the outside that give the tire better grip. “Generally, the more you have of that, the easier it’s going to be in the snow,” he said.

A lot of customers are doing what they can now to make winter as easy as it can be, and tires are only part of that. “Get your fluids checked. Have your wiper fluid checked. Have an extra gallon in the back of the car for emergency purposes. Make sure you have a full gas tank. Make sure your oil is good to go. And, make sure that you set your tires at a proper tire pressure,” Brown advised.

Brown says now is the time to take care of all of that, before the biggest rush of customers expected this weekend. If you wait, you should expect to deal with crowds. “Get it done now before the storm comes, before the snow hits, before all the people rush and do all the same thing at the same time. Cut down your waiting time,” Brown said. “No one likes to stand in a tire store for hours on end and waiting for their vehicle.”
