BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — From the streets to the water, beer boats are coming to Buffalo!
Buffalo Pedal Tours is the company that put a pub on wheels. Ken Szal brought the pedal tours to life in Buffalo two years ago. He has five beer bikes in his garage and he’s adding two more, but the new ones are quite different.
For the first time in Buffalo, Szal is putting the pub bike on water. He says it will be similar to the bikes on land, but will resemble a boat.
“I travel a lot and I go to different cities and I read a lot of different stuff and I was bored and saying what can I do different for the business that we haven’t done before? We’re going to be taking something like one of our pub crawlers and putting it on a pontoon boat,” said Szal.
Each driver will have to be certified by the U.S. Coast Guard. The boat will only travel on calm waters with less congestion.
Much like the ones on land, you’ll have to pedal to get the beer boat going.
“People are going to pedal, the peddling will generate energy and it’s going to propel the boat, but if there’s a condition where the water is really, really strong we can’t expect people to be able to pedal it, so we’re going to have a backup motor there to help the people,” said Szal.
Szal says since the announcement he’s been flooded with calls.
More and more People in western New York are booking tours on the trendy attraction. The company did over 2,000 tours in 2016 and they’re still booking tours throughout the winter.
Szal says people will probably see them testing the beer bikes on the water in the spring, he expects to start tours in May.
Both beer bike boats are being constructed right now, both will hold 14 people each.
The water tours will be an hour and a half long.
