Daemen College students suspended over apparent “KKK” outfit

AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two students are suspended from Daemen College after one wore what appeared to be a “KKK” costume on campus Monday night.

In a letter sent home to students and staff, President Gary Olson said a student put on a greek goddess costume and made a white hood that resembled an outfit worn by a KKK member. The letter says the student knocked on another student’s door while wearing the costume.

“I find it unacceptable that at this institution, and in this day and age, people would knowingly wear an outfit that symbolizes hatred and violence and assume that his is an acceptable joke. To be clear, it is not a joke, and it is against the policies outlined in the Daemen College Student Code of Conduct,” Olsen stated in the letter.

The student who wore the costume and another student who helped dress him have been placed on interim suspension. The incident is under investigation by Student Affairs.

The students’ names have not been released.
