Lockport family facing heartbreaking loss days before Thanksgiving

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) — “I am kind of numb to it right now I’m still in shock. I know it happened but I still don’t feel like it’s happened. I know every time I look at them I’m going to see their father in them cause they all have a piece of him,” said Trina O’Neil, Nick’s wife.

Trina says her 3 kids ages 6, 3, and 4 months, will always be a reminder of their father and her husband Nick. They were together for ten years.

“It literally was love at first sight I was just like oh my god he’s the one and I knew it,” said O’Neil.

Nick was diagnosed with colon cancer in February, while Trina was pregnant with their baby girl Isabelle. The cancer spread to Nick’s bones, and his spine. He underwent several rounds of radiation and chemotherapy.

“We ended up moving to Lockport with my parents due to all of the finances and the struggle of trying to keep up with the house, the kids, his sickness,” said O’Neil.

Nick was able to witness the birth of his baby girl, but his health quickly declined again just months after. He lost his long 9-month battle to cancer on Sunday, just days before Thanksgiving.

“It kills me because I want her to have a dad. I know she will, but he’s an angel instead of actually being here physically,” said O’Neil.

Nick was only 27, and his birthday is next month just two days after Christmas. A time Trina and her family know will be a tough reminder.

“She’s strong she’s a very strong woman but it’s just such a great loss I mean he was amazing, great father, husband, son in law,” said Kathryn Peyatt, Trina’s mother.
