BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Congressman Chris Collins is currently serving as a liaison on President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team. Congressman Collins has been a loyal supporter, and was the first congressman to endorse the President-elect.
In an interview with News 4’s Nalina Shapiro, the former Erie County Executive spelled out an ambitious plan he is confident will be accomplished in the first year of the Trump administration. Congressman Collins says manufacturing jobs will be added to the Western New York economy, taxes will be cut and he believes the Affordable Care Act will be repealed and replaced.
“We’re talking about manufacturing jobs, think about everything we import, we can make them here, we can make TVs, iPhones, toasters, certainly automobiles,” said Congressman Collins.
The republican’s confidence stems from his party having control of the House and the Senate.
“We do know for the first time in a very long time control all those levers, but we’ve got to work through a filibuster potential in the senate,” said Congressman Collins. “There are strategic decisions to be made and issues we’re going to have to resolve to get these things signed into law.”
Congressman Collins doesn’t believe President-elect Trump’s tax plan needs to be focused more to directly help the middle class.
According to the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center a household with two kids bringing in $82,000 a year would only save about $40.00 each week in their paychecks, while big corporations would reap the most benefits.
Congressman Collins believes corporations won’t hold onto the money but will be reinvested it to help everyone else.
During the interview Congressman Collins said it is time to “end this nonsense about wind and solar energy being the salvation of America, because it’s not.”
But a few days later when we asked for a clarification, he said he supports the Solar City plant in Buffalo, promising new jobs.
In a statement Congressman Collins said, “I believe Solar City has a role to play in America’s energy production industry. Solar energy is one of the many types of energy America needs to harness in order to reach our full potential and reduce our reliance on foreign energy sources.”
Currently the congressman from Clarence is busying taking calls, people’s resumes and passing along information to the President-elect’s team.
“When I was at this dinner I got three resumes and walking through the airport I got two and I got seven on the House floor today and I got six phone calls,” said Congressman Collins, all from people who want to work in a Trump administration.
