Charges against 2 related to Williamsville native’s death could be dropped

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two college students charged with hazing in the death of Nolan Burch could have their charges dropped.

The 18-year-old from Williamsville died of alcohol poisoning at a party at West Virginia University. Another Williamsville native, Richard Schwartz, 20, was accused of handing Burch a bottle of liquor during a ceremony at a fraternity known as “Big/Little.”

Schwartz’s lawyer says his client is profoundly saddened by Burch’s death, but is not responsible for it.

Jordon Hankins was also charged with hazing.

The Burch family had filed a lawsuit against West Virginia University to set a precedent for change in the future and they say, to change the culture of hazing.

The students’ charges will be dropped if they stay out of trouble for two years, do community service and attend an alcohol awareness program. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
