BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A couple driving through Buffalo says they saw a school bus driver who appeared to be texting behind the wheel. The couple took pictures of distracted bus driver driver in question.

“These kids are at the mercy of the bus driver, I looked in the back, and there were children in the back, and I looked at the front, and I am watching a girl looking at her lap on the phone driving in heavy traffic,” said Ken Higham.

Higham and Edna Whitmore spotted this bus on Delaware Ave near Tacoma, after they say it appeared to be driving erratically a little before 3pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Higham said, “Now at the speed she was going, granted I don’t think anything serious could have happened, but you never know.”

Higham pulled up along side of the bus – and Whitmore took several pictures of the bus driver. But as Edna was taking the pictures, they say they were shocked at the bus driver’s reaction.

Whitmore said, “I said Kenny, she smiled at me, driving a bus texting, eating chips and she smiles.”

Higham added, “That wasn’t the reaction I expected from the bus driver, traveling with children in the bus, and being caught with a picture taken with a phone in her hand.”

The bus appears to be owned by First Student – which is a transportation contractor. There’s no word yet on what district the students belong to, or what school the bus was going to or from.

News 4 spoke to First Student regarding the alleged incident. The representative said First Student will investigate the allegations, and that the driver has been placed on administrative leave.
