ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Canisius College freshman was killed in a shooting Friday morning.
Police said 18-year-old Victoria Brooks and her mother Christie Brooks were found dead from apparent gun shot wounds at a home on Wellington Avenue in Rochester just after 7 a.m.
Longtime friend of Christie Brooks, Latoya Williams said the mother of eight was all about family.
“We’re just as lost as everyone else. We can’t believe this is happening right now,” Williams said.
Rochester Police Chief Michael Ciminelli said the investigation is in early stages.
“Family members found two persons deceased at that location. And several additional children in the house. At this time we have very little information but we are investigating it as a homicide,” Chief Ciminelli told the media Friday.
Williams said Victoria often acted a second mother figure in the family.
“She was always there for her siblings. She worked, she was in college. Like she was doing everything she was supposed to. She was an honor role student. And she just loved life and loved her family.”
Police have not yet made any arrests.
“Whoever did it I just want them to come forward. They need to give themselves, turn themselves in,” Williams said.
A co-worker posted on Facebook “I met Victoria only a short time ago when she became a student worker in our office. She was one of the sweetest, kindest people I’ve ever met.”
Family members said Victoria was home in Rochester celebrating Thanksgiving.
Canisius College released this statement:
“The Canisius College community is profoundly saddened by the deaths of freshman student Victoria Brooks and her mother, Christie Brooks. We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to their surviving family members and friends. Grief counseling will be made available to all members of the Canisius College community this coming week”
