BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – When it comes to breaking records, Alyssa Helak is no stranger to success.
She has spent the previous three years of her high school career shattering records for the Vicotor swim club…nine of them in fact. All with the goal of reaching the highest level of competition.
“I kind of wanted to make Olympic trials,” Helak said. When I was 16 I dedicated my life to getting this trials cut and I actually missed it by a second.”
Alyssa turned her focus on high school swimming. And, no surprise, she was one of the best in the pool. Going undefeated in her senior, inaugural season, until he finished second in the 100 back stroke and third in the 200 freestyle at the state meet.
“High school swimming is super different. I know now that it is so much fun and a different environment. So it was kind of like why not? ‘It is your senior year, you’re going to have fun and you’re going to go fast.”
She maintained her top performance for Williamsvile North, along with still swimming for her club team in Victor. She maintained a perfect 4.0 average while doing her studying on the road.
“It sounds kind of crazy but I get used to it and that is a good three hours in the car so why not read or study?”
That dedication in and out of the pool got the attention of many big name programs. Alyssa settled on LSU.
“I met the team and the coaches and I knew I belonged there, it was so amazing and so much fun.”
And, her dreams of those Olympic trials are certainly not out of the picture just yet.
“I know it seems far away because it is 2020 but, for me, I have no doubt that iI am going to get there in 2020 because of the amazing coaches and facilities and all the resources they have at LSU.”
