NIAGARA FALLS, ON (WIVB) — Niagara Falls is shining twice as bright this holiday season thanks to a $4 million upgrade of LED lights.
The new lighting is a major improvement from the system used for the past 20 years. Crowds got a first look at the lights Thursday night during a special unveiling ceremony to show off the bolder, brighter colors and advanced display.
The city is hoping the upgrade will boost tourism on both sides of the border.
“We are very fortunate to have community stakeholders on both sides of the border who have supported our vision since the project was first proposed. The improvement to the nightly illumination of the Falls will encourage visitation to Niagara and we appreciate the stakeholders recognizing the importance of this project for the destination,” Chairman of the Niagara Falls Illumination Board Mark Thomas said.
In addition to providing lighting twice the levels of the previous system, the new lights are expected to last 25 years.
