NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) — Niagara Falls police were forced to fatally shoot a dog while executing a search warrant on 20th St.
The police department’s Emergency Response Team went to the address on Wednesday night and ordered three people out front to get on the ground.
As officers made their way up the porch stairs, a female opened the door presumably to see what was going on outside when a pitbull ran past her and bit an officer’s leg.
The officer pushed his gun into the dog’s mouth and caused him to release his leg, but the dog lunged at the officer again, forcing him to shoot it.
The team knew that a dog would be there and planned on using distraction devices, but the timing of the door opening did not allow them to do this.
Police say the narcotics portion of the incident and the dispatching of the animal are both under investigation.
