BUFFALO (WIVB) – Two firefighters were hurt fighting a fire at the corner of Grote and Military which damaged three buildings.
Neighbors tell News 4 the fire started around 6 o’clock Monday morning. That’s when they noticed large flames and thick smoke pouring from the building at 12 Grote Street.
That fire spread to the building next door, at 203 Military, which has a store front on the first floor and apartments on the second floor. The people who live on the second floor were able to escape safely.
There was also damage to another building at 205 Military Road, which is used as a community center.
“We had a $120,000 damage to 12 Grote. It’s a total loss. At 203 Military road, another $120,000 to the structure, $80,000 to the contents of that structure. Then at 205 Military, another exposure to that property. $25,000 in damage to that structure,” Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield said.
We’re told the community center at 205 Military Road was left with significant water damage.
Firefighters were on the scene for hours Monday morning trying to put out the flames.
The Fire Commissioner tells News 4 one firefighter had to be checked out for breathing problems, and another firefighter was taken to the hospital with a shoulder injury.
Fire Marshals are working to determine the cause of the fire. “Every fire is suspicious until we prove it otherwise,” Whitfield said.
Neighbors tell us they first saw flames on the porch on the first floor of the house on Grote Street. We’re told that house was boarded up and was recently sold at auction.
