BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Last month, News 4 featured Buffalo Police officer Jennifer Whitaker, who jumped in on a flight to Las Vegas and saved the life of a woman who was having a heart attack.
Whitaker was one of several officers honored for their quick action and bravery Tuesday afternoon during a special ceremony at headquarters downtown.
Whitaker, who’s an eight-year veteran of the force, was aboard a flight to Last Vegas in October, when a woman went into cardiac arrest.
Seated a few rows away, Whitaker jumped to action, and was joined by other emergency personnel aboard. Together, and thanks to Whitaker’s leadership, the woman lived to offer a sincere thank you.
A few weeks later, the Niagara County’s district attorney, who was also on the flight, penned a letter of commendation and sent it off to Commissioner Daniel Derenda.
It’s one of many such letters in Whitaker’s personnel file.
On Tuesday, Whitaker was one of several officers to receive the Commissioner’s Medal of Commendation.
“Today is just a small snapshot of those officers, because we have one of the best departments in the country,” Derenda said. “Our officers do a fantastic job each and every day, they put their lives on the line for the citizens of this city, and they do a great job. And in Jennifer’s case, she was off duty, she let her training take over and she saved somebody’s life”
