Uber holds launch party ahead of ride sharing debut in WNY

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — We are in the final countdown until ride sharing officially comes to western New York.

The new state law goes into effect on Thursday.

Uber put on a ride sharing launch party Tuesday night at the EXPO Market in downtown Buffalo.

State lawmakers debated ride sharing expansion for years.

It was finally included in the state budget that was approved in April.

Drivers are excited about the opportunities this can offer them.

Uber driver Jerry Pomplun said “I like the flexibility of it, the potential to earn extra money. The flexibility was the mainstay of it, but supplement income, things like that, work on my own terms, my own time.”

Wednesday, city and law enforcement leaders will talk about how they believe ride sharing can help reduce drunk driving in western New York.

Uber and Lyft drivers can start picking up passengers Thursday.
