DUNKIRK, N.Y. (WIVB)- Dunkirk Police located an 11 and 12-year-old at one of their homes early Monday morning, after police say they allegedly burglarized a local store.
The Madhatter and More on Lakeshore Drive East in Dunkirk carries authentic sports jerseys; but that’s not what the owner says the juvenile burglars were after.
According to authorities, the two took off with handfuls of fidget spinners; they only cost about six dollars, but police report the kids went to great lengths to get them.
Investigators say the boys got into the store through the roof, and cut the power to the place.
Alexis Katta is the store’s manager. She says store’s alarm system went off in a matter of minutes. According to her, surveillance footage shows the boys going for the register too, but video shows they couldn’t get in.
She says they knew right where the spinners were.
“They grabbed their spinners and ran out. They actually left a trail with them when they left so they didn’t get as many as I think they had hoped to,” Katta says.
Police tracked the stolen merchandise to the one of the boys homes in a matter of hours.
The store suffered damage to the door and window as well, but for the most part the burglars created a mess.
Katta is glad the new gadget is attracting so much interest, she’d just prefer it come from paying customers.
The boys accused of burglarizing the store are no longer welcome to shop there.
