LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) — “Didn’t see her coming didn’t have any chance to stop, came out in between vehicles, never had a chance to see her and by the time she saw her it was too late to avoid the accident,” said Chief Deputy Michael Dunn, Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.
A 4-year-old girl is in critical condition, after she was struck by a car on Ridge Road in the town of Lockport before 12:30 Sunday afternoon. The girl was at a yard sale with her mother. Her mother crossed the street, and the 4-year-old followed.
“Unfortunately with cars parked on both sides the driver of the vehicle heading in that direction couldn’t see the 4-year-old coming out from between the cars,” said Dunn.
The driver was identified as a 79-year-old woman from Newfane. Chief Deputy Dunn says the incident was a tragic accident, and speed was not a factor in the crash.
“The driver was very shaken up about it obviously. A lot of our officers on the scene and our dispatchers that handle the calls they’re all shaken up too because we all have children,” said Dunn.
Some residents on the street saw the whole accident unfold, but are too shaken up to talk on camera.
Chief Deputy Dunn says the 4-year-old suffered severe head injuries and multiple bone fractures. She underwent surgery last night, but her future is still uncertain.
“The whole community is praying for her. We’ve had several people respond to our social media post about the accident offering their well wishes and their prayers,” said Dunn.
The accident is still under investigation.
Dunn says the girl’s family is from Niagara County, but not from the town of Lockport.
The 4-year-old is currently at Women and Children’s hospital. Her name has not been released at this time.
