Albany-area bar’s drink policy divides customers

CLIFTON, PARK N.Y. (WIVB) — A policy from a restaurant in Albany has some customers shaking their heads.

Others say it’s about time managers put safety before profit.

This has to do with serving customers alcohol.

One particular pub has a policy — It will only serve one drink to customers who come in with kids.

Peddlers Bar and Bistro in Clifton Park has had the policy for seven years. The manager says it’s all about protecting children from the dangers of drinking and driving.

One longtime bartender says that most times, it’s an easy policy to enforce. Only occasionally do they have to deal with customers who put up a fight.

“I could never live with myself knowing that I killed somebody driving,” the bar’s manager, Melisa Gravelle, said. “I could never do that. It’s a choice that you can avoid.”

Greg Culver, a customer at the bar, said “Why take the chance? Definitely doesn’t make any sense. That way you keep those people off the road.”

Another customer, Barb Buckley, is a retired educator. She thinks it’s “a great policy.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
