WIVB-TV has sponsored the JDRF ‘One Walk’ to Cure Diabetes for many years to help raise awareness of efforts to fight type 1 diabetes and provide patient support. It’s estimated that 20,000 Western New York families live with the daily struggles of type 1 diabetes.  This disease can strike both children and adults suddenly.  It makes patients insulin-dependent for life and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. More than 85 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education. JDRF is second only to the U.S. government in funding diabetes research.

In 2014, the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes was held on June 8 in Delaware Park.  The event drew a record crowd of 3,200 walkers.  With major support from community sponsors such as WIVB-TV and Tops Markets, organizers are confident they reached the Walk’s fundraising goal of $650,000.  To learn more about JDRF and opportunities to volunteer visit the Western New York JDRF page.
